Live Sound

Live Sound

Live sound Theory and Mixing Training Program

We offer a short duration training program covering the Live Sound, this training program not only provides the student with all the fundamental knowledge required to setup and operate live sound equipment but also provides them with Hands On practical training in Mixing of live performances.

The theory module on the training program provides the student with all the basic of sound, acoustics and live sound equipment theory and operation.

The Mixing Modules provide the student with all the hands on equalization, dynamics and effects knowledge that will enable the student to create outstanding live sound mixes no matter what type of music is being performed, from rock to traditional, we cover it all.

All training is individual, hands on and each training program is configured to suit the students requirements.

NOTE: Our training is not specific to any particular hardware and software, whether you are using an old analog system or the latest state of the art digital system, our training skills and techniques applies to them all.

Basic Sound Theory

Each student receives a copy of our interactive DVD Sound Book 1 that is packed with videos lessons and unique graphics, animations and audio examples to help them understand what Live Sound is all about..

Our basic sound theory training program covers the following subjects:

1st Module Sound Theory

A) Basic Principles of Sound
b) Digital Audio (Sample Rate, Bit Depth)
c) Acoustics, Boundary Effect, Acoustic Coupling
d) Sound Fields, Phase/Phase Shifts/Standing Waves/ Inverse Square Law
e) The Audio Spectrum (complete breakdown of the audio spectrum, frequencies and ranges)
f) Microphones (Types and Microphone Techniques)
g) Loudspeaker Systems (Types, Setup and Uses)
h) Dynamics (Compression, Multi-band, Limiting)
i) Effects (Delay, Reverb, Flange, Phase, Distortion etc.)
j) System Interconnections
(Balanced/Unbalanced Lines, Phantom Power, Passive and Active Systems,
Crossovers, Amps, Speaker Connections)
k) Mixing Consoles (analog and digital theory and operation)
l) Digital Audio Work Stations (DAWs)

2nd Module: Advanced Filters/Equalizers/Ear Training/Psychoacoustics

Live Performance Mixing. Here the student learns the art of mixing live artists from many different genres of music with hands on, individual training.

This module deals with filters, equalizers and advanced equalization techniques and is supported by our ear training and psychoacoustics interactive tutorials.
The student will learn to accurately identify problematic frequency ranges and apply the correct equalization solution as well as, being taught how to recognize the effects of simultaneous masking, filter ringing and phase shifts all associated with poor equalization techniques.

Advanced Subtractive Equalization Techniques

This module also teaches the student how to use 100% subtractive equalization techniques, never use additive EQ again.

The 2nd module is supported by practical subtractive equalization projects.

3rd Module: Advanced Dynamics (The Dark side of audio)

Dynamics is the only audio process that we should not really 'hear' and because of this can be very confusing.

This module takes the student thru all dynamic processes, gates, compressors, parallel and side chain, multi-bands, limiters, maximizes, Loudness monitoring, de-essers.

The dynamics module is fully supported with hands on practical lessons showing the student how, when, where and what type of dynamics to use for a particular situation.

4th Module: Advanced Effects

This module deals with how to use effects creatively without them destroying the intelligibility of the mix such as an over abundance of reverb that just creates 'noise'.

This module covers all effect processes and is supported by practical projects.

5th Module: Advanced Mixing

The 5th module takes all the knowledge gained the previous 3 modules and applies this knowledge to create final music mixes covering many different music types from rock to traditional.

This module is 100% practical with definite goals that need to be achieved.

Training Schedules

Training times are from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Sunday.

Minimum 3 hours training per training session.

Costs: All our training programs are R100 per hour and are booked on a monthly basis, therefore 4 x 3 hour lessons per month (1 x 3 hour lesson per week) costs R1,200 per month.
